Dhanteras celebration 2016

In the evening of this very special day, people lite up the lamps (diyas) and also welcome the goddess of prosperity "Lakshmi". There is one unique method of Hindu people to welcome Goddess Lakshmi is to draw the rangoli with goddess' footprints which indicate the arrival of Goddess Lakshmi. Aarti of Goddess Lakshmi is sung, and fruits, as well as sweets, are offered to the goddess. After that people go to the jewellery shops and buy gold or silver jewellery or some people who are not able to buy, such wealthy things buy at least a utensil on this day. People wear new outfits and jewellery. Some people also play the game of gambling on this day.

History of Dhanteras

There was a 16 years old son of King Hima. His luck was not with him. He would die on the fourth day of his marriage by snake-bite. On the fourth day of his wedding, his wife did not allow him to sleep. She gathered all her ornaments and also gold and silver coins and keep them all at the entrance of their sleeping chamber. She lit up the lamps in her home. On the next day, when the Yama - the god of death came to take her husband, the God Yama's eyes were dazzled and blinded by the brilliance of the lamps and the jewellery. Yama was not able to enter the prince's sleeping chamber. So, he climbed the heap of gold, silver coins and ornaments and sat there the whole night. On the morning, he went away from there. So the king was saved by his smart wife. That day has come to be celebrated as the Dhanteras. The following day of the Dhanteras is known as Naraka Chaturdashi (Naraka means hell and Chaturdashi mean 14th day). "Yamadeepdaan" is the another name of this day. "Chhoti Diwali" or "Minor Diwali" is also other names of the same because it is the night before the day of Diwali.

Dhanteras Laxmi Puja Vidhi

Before Dhanteras, people clean their homes and business places and then renovate as well as decorate also. People decorate their homes with lamps, lantern, flowers, rangoli, etc. They welcome the goddess of prosperity very heartily by doing her worship, Aarti, and offering fruits and sweets. Small footprints are also drawn at the entrance of their homes with the use of rice and vermilion powder. Lamps are kept burning throughout the night.
