Significance of Navaratri:The Navaratri period is decided as per the Lunar Calendar. During these nine days, all women and men wear different clothes of different colours. This festival is dedicated to Goddess Amba. Goddess Amba is known as the Goddess of Power. Navaratri festival is also known as Navadurga Parva. This period is one of the periods for the Sadhanas and worship of Goddess Shakti. The word Shakti means energy. This Shakti is considered as the goddess Durga. It is also said that before the beginning of the war between Kauravas and Pandavas in the Mahabharata, the Lord Krishna itself worshipped the goddess of Shakti i.e. goddess Durga with the praying of victory of Pandavas.
There are total nine forms of goddess Shakti i.e. Shailputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kalaratri, Mahagauri and Siddhidatri. Shailputri was the first incarnation of goddess Shakti. All these nine forms of Goddess Shakti are worshipped during these nine days as "Nava-Durga". Shiva Purana also describes the divine emanations of goddess Durga.
Navaratri CelebrationNavaratri started from the very first day of the bright fortnight in the month of lunar of Ashwin. If we talk about English calendar, then this festival comes every year at the beginning of the month of October. The actual dates of this festival are determined as per the lunar calendar.
Types of Navaratri:There are total five types of Navaratri comes during a year. They are as following:
1. Vasanta Navaratri:
This Navaratri comes in the month of Chaitra i.e. during the months of March-April. During these nine days, different forms of Goddess Durga or Shakti are worshipped. This Navaratri comes during the Shukla Paksha of Chaitra month. The beginning of this Navaratri is also known as the starting of a new year as per Hindu Lunar calendar.
2. Ashad Navaratri:
The other names of Ashad Navaratri are Gupta, Gayatri or Shakambhari Navaratri. The nine days of this Navaratri is also dedicated to different forms of goddess Shakti. This Navaratri comes in the month of Ashad. As per English calendar, this festival comes in the months of June-July. It also comes in the Shukla Paksha of Ashad month.
3. Sharad Navaratri:
Among all five types of Navaratri, this is the most popular and famous Navaratri. It is also known as Maha Navaratri. It is celebrated on the first day of bright fortnight of the lunar month of Ashwin. This is celebrated in the month of Sharad as per Lunar calendar. As per English calendar, this comes in the months of September-October.
4. Pausha Navaratri:
This Navaratri comes in the month of Pausha as per Lunar calendar and in the month of December-January as per English calendar.
5. Magha Navaratri:
This Navaratri is a type of Gupta Navaratri. It comes in the waxing phase of moon in the month of January-February.
