We heartily thank you and are truly proud of you.It gives us immense happiness that you have brought two medals home.However, Sharad Kumar did not reach the top three we still applaud all his efforts.

Twenty years old Mariyappan Thangavelu from Periavadagampatti, some 50km from Salem,Tamil Nadu brings gold for India for high jumps at Rio Paralympics 2016. MariyappanThangavelu ascending to 1.89m mark that shocked the world.He truly is a national hero.Not only Mr. MariyappanThangavelu but his follow athlete Bhati Varun Singh jumped 1.86 his personal best to clinch the bronze medal.USA’s Sam Grewe takes silver with his 1.86m jump.
It was not easy for Mr. Mariyappan Thangavelu to reach to this level.His life has been full of struggle and now all his efforts pay off. The hard work and determination and all the problems he suffered are switched to happiness not just for himself but to 1.25 crore people of India.
Mariyappan Thangavelu's Journey from Small Village to Gold Medal at Rio ParalympicssMr. Mariyappan Thangavelu was born in a very small village Periavadagampatti in a family with very low income. He was permanently disabled when he was only 5 years old when his leg was squashed under a wheel while going to school.It must have been a very difficult time in the family but with his courage and support from family and his coach Mr. MariyappanThangavelu has made the whole country proud.
Mr. Mariyappan Thangavelu,Mr.Bhati Varun Singh and Sharad Kumar participated in the T-42 high jump which is a disability classification for athletes with single above the knee amputations,limb deficiency, the difference in leg length,incapacitated muscle power or similar disability.
Mariyappan Thangavelu mother sells vegetable for a living. She before few years took a loan of Rs 3 Lacs for his medical treatment which is still to be paid. His first competition was when he was 14 years old, where he came second. He is trained by his coach Satyanarayan. Mr.Satyanaryan saw his talent at the National para athletics championship, at that time he was just 18. He put a lot of hard work and trained very hard which made him Worlds best para athlete in high jump in the T-42 classification of the game.
This is not the first time Mariyappan Thangavelu has made us proud, he won the gold in the International Paralympic Committee Tunisia Grand Prix where he jumped 1.78m at that time his personal best.This is truly an historic moment as this is only the third gold by Indian in Paraolympics games.
Mariyappan Thangavelu played volleyball in school even with his disability, he was naturally motivated person.He believed in himself and believed nothing is impossible and greatness can be achieved with hard work and determination. His Physical Education teacher told him to try high jump in school and Mariyappan participated with able-bodied athletes when he was 14 and surprised all by finishing second.
“I didn’t see myself as different from able-bodied kids,”he said.
Mariyappan friends did not believe he could do it but when they saw him jump first time they were stunned and since then they all come support him whenever he is participating.
Mariyappan believes his god is his right toe which allows him to jump higher then others. His right toe is very large and misshaped which he believes is the reason he can jump higher.
“This is what gives me leverage when I jump, It is my God.”he says.
He dreams to find a good job and wants to take care of his mother who undoubtedly is secret of his success.
We never hope any person to face any disability not just in india but any part of the world but Mr.Mariyappan Thangavelu proved that no matter what if you work hard nothing can stop you from succeeding. You have not only made us proud but every person,1.25 crore of the population appreciate your efforts that you have put in not only in Rio Paralympics but the efforts you put in to reach to that level and class of game.
