Raksha Bandhan is one of the holy festivals in India. "Rakhi Purnima", "Rakhi" and "Rakhri" are different names of "Raksha Bandhan". Rakshabandhan History

On this occasion, sisters tie a holy thread which is called Rakhi or Rakhri on their brothers'
 wrist as well as sisters wish well and prays for their brothers. Shravan Poornima is the day of Raksha Bandhan in India. Because it is a poornima, this festival comes on the full moon day. On the day of Raksha Bandhan, some people first pray to god before tying Rakhi on brothers' wrists while some people do the Tilak on the forehead of the brothers. In Sanskrit language, Raksha Bandha has some meaning i.e. "Tie of Protection". The word Raksha Bandhan is made with two different words i.e. "Raksha" which means "Protection" and second one is "Bandhan" which means "To Tie". Sister ties such holy thread to the brother and prays for the well being of her brother and in return the brother takes pledge to take care of his sister always and also gives some gift to his sister.

Rakshabandhan significance (Celebration Steps)

In India, women start their shopping of rakhi before many days of this festival. Some women also make their own rakhi by hand. There is no significance of the look of rakhi. Rakhi can be a simple thread or colorful thread. There may be some kind of decoration on the top of the rakhi. Now a day, we can also see that rakhi comes in the form of bracelet or jewellery of men.  Brothers also start the shopping of gifts for their sisters. This gift can also a small or big any but it mainly indicates the love of a brother for his sister. In the morning of Raksha Bandhan, brother and sister wear new clothes and get together with family. If brother and sister are not at the same place then sister can also send rakhi to her brother. She also sends the greeting card along with rakhi. This holy process of tying rakhi is done in front of the lamp which shows the density of fire. After tying rakhi, brother gives gifts like money, clothes or any other useful thing to his sister. Moreover, he also feed his sister some sweets or chocolates with his hand to his sister. They also hug to each other and whole family gives good wishes to both of them. Brother wears that rakhi whole day which indicates the love of his sister towards him.

Myth About Raksha Bandhan:

There are many myths about the festival of Raksha Bandhan which are as under:

1. Indra Dev:

According to Bhavishya Purana, one time there was a war between Gods and demons. At that time, Indra was disgraced by demon king Bali. So, Sachi - Indra's wife went to god Vishnu who gave her holy thread to tie on Indra's wrist. After tying that holy thread, Indra defeated the evil successfully. So from that time, Raksha Bandha is celebrated as the mark of protection.

2. King Bali and Goddess Laxmi:

According to Bhagavata Puran and Vishnu Puran, after winning three worlds from Bali, Bali asked Vishnu to live in his palace. Vishnu accepted his request. But Lakshmi did not like that palace as well as Vishnu's friendship with Bali. She wanted to return to Vaikuntha. To do that, she tied the rakhi to Bali and made him her brother. In return, Bali asked for the gift to Lakshmi. Lakshmi asked the gift whatever she wants that to be freed Vishnu from the request to live in Bali's palace. Bali accepted her request.

3. Krishna and Draupadi

Once lord Krishna cut his finger while defeating Shisupal. At that time Draupadi immediately tore off one part of her sari and bound it on the cut. Krishna said that he would provide each thread when she needed. And that was true because when Draupadi nee\ded Krishna's help and protection at that time Krishna gave her unlimited clothes.

4. Yama and Yamuna

Yama had not met his sister Yamuna for 12 years. The goddess of Yamuna river - Yamuna went to the Ganga - the goddess of Ganga river. Ganga reminded Yama about his sister and so Yama went to meet his sister. Yamuna was very happy to see her brother and she prepared lots of food for Yama. Yama asked to Yamuma what gift she wanted. Yamuna asked him to return again and see her again and again. Yama made the river Yamuna immortal.
